Ghana’s Takoradi Polytechnic to put up $10m AfDB-funded petroleum school

The Takoradi Polytechnic located at Ghana’s oil-rich Western Region, will soon establish a school of petroleum studies, head of the institution has announced.

The $10 million School funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) will be located at Akatakyi in the Ahanta West District, where authorities have acquired over 150-acre plots of land to start the project.

Rector of the Polytechnic, Rev Prof Daniel Nyarko disclosed at the school’s 12th Congregation held December 15, 2012 in Takoradi.

Prof Nyarko said the project would involve the construction of 15 approved projects including lecture theatres, laboratories, recreational and workshop facilities, the Ghana News Agency reported.

The Polytechnic has also signed two memoranda of understanding with two investors that would provide modern staff and student accommodation and a medical facility at the new campus.

The project is set to start in 2013, officials say.

Ghana started commercial oil production in December 2010 and the commodity has largely accelerated the growth of the economy.

Ghana recorded an economic growth of 14.5% in 2011 mostly fueled by oil.
