Don’t neglect the moral aspect of education – Prof Asante
Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, has said it was important to make sure that there is a tie-in between academic excellence and good character training.
He said this was the way to assure the nation of morally upright youth, ready to take the mantle of leadership, adding that a down play of discipline and acceptable social conduct could prove costly.
The Most Rev Prof Asante was addressing the 34th anniversary and speech and prize-giving day of the Kumasi Wesley Girls’ Senior High School (SHS).
“The church- holistic education and the girl-child” was the theme.
He repeated the church’s determination to partner the state not only to make education accessible to the youth but to deliver quality and that the church would continue to be associated with efforts at helping to adequately equip young people with professional and vocational skills to enable them contribute meaningfully to national development.
The Presiding Bishop praised the founding fathers of the SHS and urged the Board of Governors and stakeholders to work together to promote its growth.
Mrs Esi Oduro Asante, the Headmistress, described the performance of the school in the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as impressive, scoring 100 percent pass.
She said this had come through the hard work of both the teachers and students.
They are, however, faced with some challenges by way of inadequate classrooms, teachers’ accommodation and the lack of a dining hall and appealed to the government and the church to help tackle these challenges.
Established 34 years ago by the Methodist Church with 50 students, school now has a population of 2,600.
