Ghana rolls out activities to mark AU@50

Ms Hannah Tetteh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, on Tuesday spelt out activities to mark the 50th anniversary celebration of the African Union (AU) from May 24 to 26.

At a press briefing in Accra, the Minister said, the 50th anniversary commemoration is anchored on the theme: “Pan Africanism and the African Renaissance”.

Ms Tetteh said the celebration, would afford Ghana the opportunity to reflect on the past, present and future, looking at the agenda of Pan-Africanism and renaissance in the 21st century.

She said Ghana was proud to be part of the pioneers, who formed the Union, adding the celebration would help Ghana to have another look at its commitment to the AU.

The launch marks the 50th anniversary celebration of the formation of OAU and will also be a little more than a decade since the formation of the African Union.

Ms Tetteh said the programme of activities would start with Muslim and Christian prayers nationwide to thank God for the long years and to pray for the future of the Union and the continent.

There will be a mini trade fair and exhibition under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry followed by a flag-raising ceremony to showcase Ghana’s rich culture and also celebrate the role that it plays in Pan-Africanism and the African renaissance.

A durbar of chiefs will mark the official launch of “Ghana’s AU @50” celebrations followed by a peace march by the African Diplomats.

There will also be a banquet to showcase Africa’s rich and unique cuisine and also give people the opportunity to learn more about the different countries of the AU represented.

There will be football match to create a platform for Ghanaians to socialize with other Africans and to advance Pan-Africanism and the African Renaissance.

Other activities include Africa Youth Economic Forum and a musical concert.

Professor Atukwei Okai, Chairman of the Anniversary National Planning Committee received Ghana’s torch to signify the perpetual flame of hope for the continent and the spirit of Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance.

He pledged the commitment of the Committee to work towards the achievement of its objectives.
