Unemployed in court on drug charges
An unemployed refugee, Jeremiah Odoi Cunningham, has appeared before an Accra circuit court for possessing substances suspected to be cannabis.
Jeremiah was arrested at the Budumburam refugee camp with a white polythene bag containing 49 wraps of rocky substances and a black polythene bag containing 65 wraps of powdery whitish substances all suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea, but the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, remanded him into prison custody and deferred the sentence to August 22, 2013.
The facts as presented by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Peter Sekyie are that, Jeremiah is a refugee from Liberia living at the Budumburam refugee camp near Kasoa.
He said on August 6, 2013, the narcotic unit of the CID Headquarters carried out an operation to arrest narcotic peddlers within Accra and its environs.
The prosecution said in the course of the operation the team visited area āEā of Liberia Camp, a place noted for drug peddling.
He said the team on reaching the area spotted Jeremiah selling substances suspected to be narcotic to his prospective customers, who took to their heels upon seeing the Police.
DSP Sekyie said the suspect was arrested and a search conducted on him revealed a white polythene bag containing the 49 wraps of rocky substances and 65 wraps of powdery whitish substances.
He said in his caution statement, Jeremiah claimed ownership of the exhibit, and stated that they were given to him by one O.B, to sell for him for a commission, saying that efforts were however being made to track down the said O.B.
