Five Nigerians remanded in prison custody for piracy
A Kumasi Circuit Court on Thursday remanded five Nigerians in prison custody for allegedly pirating the works of Akan Film Producers Association.
The accused Larabu Sumanu 23 and Abdul Raman Mumuni 25, pleaded guilty and were convicted on their plea but sentence was deferred.
However, Issah Ousman 22, Kabiru Amadu 32, and Issaka Mohammed pleaded not guilty and would re-appear on January 23.
The prosecution told the court presided over by Mr D.P.W. Amedior that the Ashanti Regional Police Command had information that some people were pirating the works at Alabar a suburb of Kumasi.
He said a combined team of police personnel and task force of Akan Film Producers Association went to the areas and arrested the accused persons and about 2,000 copies of Akan Film Video Disc packed in 10 boxes were retrieved.
The prosecution said the accused persons procured video discs of original copies, send them outside the country, reproduce and smuggle them into the country for sale at cheaper prices.
