Afram Plains farmers' want Fulani herdsmen flushed out
Settler farmers in the Asante-Akim North portion of the Afram Plains have appealed to the government to help flush out Fulani herdsmen, terrorizing and destroying their farms.
The activities of the herdsmen have become a major source of worry to the people.
The Fulanis have been setting vast farm lands on fire with impunity, grazing cattle on food crops and vegetable farms and had left water bodies contaminated by the dung of their animals.
Additionally, they bully and subject the people to all forms of harassment.
Nana Kwabena Obeng, Gyasehene of Bebome, told the Ghana News Agency that many of the farmers are being forced to leave the area as the situation was simply becoming unbearable.
This could have serious impact on food security in the Asante-Akim North Municipality as the Afram Plains remained its food basket.
He said it was therefore important that the security agencies acted decisively to drive away the Fulani and their cattle.
He said any delay or half-hearted approach could be counter productive with devastating consequences.
Nana Obeng said previous attempts to rid the area of the nuisance posed by the herdsmen had little success and this time there should be an all out onslaught.
Mr Thomas Osei-Bonsu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), when contacted said efforts were being made by the assembly to tackle the problem.
He said since the Plains was the hub of food production in the municipality it was imperative they go to every length to stop the destructive activities of the Fulani herdsmen.
