Ghanaian doctoral student in US shot by police
A Ghanaian studying for a PhD degree in the US has been shot and wounded by police, The Gainsville Sun reports. Sources close to the investigation said he suffered a gunshot wound to his head or face. He is in hospital.
According to the report, the 35-year-old University of Florida student of geograpgy, Kofi Adu-Brempong was shot Tuesday night, March 3, 2010.
Adu-Brempong was said to be heard screaming in his apartment and police was called in. Quoting sources, the publication said police negotiated with him for about an hour after he had barricaded himself into his apartment.
The report indicated that Adu-Brempong threatened officers with a pipe and a knife and he was shot.
Other sources were quoted as saying Adu-Brempong was delusional, following fears that his student visa will be denied.
Adu-Brempong, meanwhile has been described as someone who suffered from polio in childhood and walks with the help of a stick.
