Judge deplores Ghanaians’ obsession with travel outside
Mr Justice S. K. Sarpong Appiah, a Circuit Court Judge at Juaso, in the Asante-Akim South District, has raised concern about the unbridled quest by many Ghanaians to travel outside without following proper procedures.
This, he said had created a fertile ground for unscrupulous individuals to take advantage of, and dupe those desperate to travel of huge sums of money under the pretext of helping them to live their dream.
Mr Sarpong Appiah said this when Mavis Asante Boateng appeared before the court, accused of swindling three people of a total of $12,000.00, with the promise of assisting them to travel to Israel.
Police Detective Inspector Adu Ofori, had told the court that Mavis and her husband, Yaw Ofosu, reside in Egypt, in December last year, convinced the victims that they could arrange to send them to Israel.
Comfort Nsiah, Benjamin Danso and Osei Manu, expressed interest and each paid $4,000.00 to the couple.
The accused, managed to get them to Egypt, and there they put them on a bus to the desert, and abandoned them to their fate.
They were left with no option but to enter Israel illegally, where they were arrested, detained for a month, before being deported.
The prosecution said on arrival, they reported the case to the police and Mavis who was then in the country was arrested.
She pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢10,000.00 with two sureties.
