Driver convicted for owning chainsaw lumber

The Dormaa Circuit Court has slapped a GH¢400 fine on Issaka Shaibu, a driver, for using his vehicle to convey 437 pieces of chainsaw lumber from Nkrankwanta to Nsuhia in the Dormaa Municipality.

Shaibu who was also bonded by the court to be of good behaviour over the next 12 months would serve an 18-month jail term if he defaulted.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Matthew Yeboah, told the court presided by Justice Isaac Bright Akwantey, that a multi-purpose municipal task force established to fight crime in Dormaa had a tip-off on December 29, 2009, that the suspect had used his KIA bus vehicle with registration number GR 2975 X to convey illegally sawn lumber from Nkrankwanta.

He said the task force ambushed the vehicle and intercepted the load at Nsuhia and handed him over to the Dormaa police for prosecution.

“The suspect accepted responsibility for the load in a caution statement to the police,” the prosecution said.

In an interview with the GNA, the Municipal Task Force Coordinator, Mr Ernest Ntow, deplored the upsurge of chainsaw activities in the area, and gave the assurance that his outfit was doing what it could to arrest the situation.
