Church group trains community leaders on malaria prevention

The Anglican Diocesan Development and Relief Organisation (ADDRO), at the weekend trained community leaders at Sapelliga in the Bawku West District on the prevention and control of malaria.

ADDRO, in collaboration with the Episcopal Relief and Development, another charitable organisation with funds from the American President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), organised the training at a workshop aimed at reducing the effects of malaria in the area.

The organisation hopes to reduce malaria infection drastically through the distribution of Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINS), which is a core aspect of the programme.

In addition to the LLINS, which targets children under five years and pregnant women, ADDRO has an obligation to train about 1,000 volunteers in the project areas of Bawku West and the Garu-Tempane for three years.

Facilitating the workshop, Bawku West District Officer in charge of the PMI, Mr Ebenezer Ndebilla told the participants that they are key in ensuring the success of the project.

He said the use of LLINS is the most effective and affordable way of preventing mosquito bites and malaria.

Mr Ndebilla took the participants through the cost benefits, income and expenditure analyses of malaria infection to give them an idea of how much an individual could spend on the disease.
