Government to invest in the water sector – Bissiw

Dr. Hannah Bissiw, Deputy Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, on Tuesday said that government would invest in the water sector to safeguard the health of the people.

She said that government was aware that many Ghanaians lack access to safe water and it was taking adequate steps to reverse the situation.

Dr Bissiw was inaugurating GH¢132,000 water project for two communities in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central Region, at Ankwanda.

The project that was funded by the Dutch Government under its “Water for Life” programme, consist of five standpipes each for Bronyibima and Ankwanda in the district, to supplement the existing water facilities, which could not meet the demands of the people.

Mr Martin N’Jisse, Managing Director of Acua Vitens Rand Limited, who managed the project, said that the Dutch Government had so far spent about 500,000 Euros on similar projects in the country.

He asked the people to keep their environment clean to avoid diseases and to maintain the standpipes regularly to prolong their lifespan.

The chairman of the Board of Vitens and Rand water Services, Gerhard Van Den Top, noted that access to clean water was vital but expensive.

Mr Emmanuel Ashia, General Manager of the Central Region Office of the Company, asked the people of the two towns to pay their water bills regularly to ensure regular maintenance of the standpipes.
