Government urged to set-up road maintenance squads
Mr Ofori Amoyaw, an opinion leader at Apirade near Akuapem, has proposed the formation of road maintenance squads at the regional and district levels to undertake speedily repair of roads.
He said the deplorable nature of roads in the rural areas were major causes of accidents and frequent breakdown of vehicles.
Mr Amoyaw said the formation of the squad would put in place measures to quickly attend to deplorable roads as well as served as a source of employment.
He said this at a meeting at Apirade in the Eastern Region on Wednesday with drivers, vehicle owners, mechanics and road contractors to discuss how best they could assist in making the roads in their areas motorable.
Mr Amoyaw appealed to the Ministry of Roads to take a critical assessment of local road contractors before awarding contracts to them to avoid shoddy works.
He said if this was done, it would save the government from spending the tax payer’s money in undertaking repair works on shoddy roads executed by bad contractors.
He added that contracts should be awarded to people, who have the equipment and the technical know-how.
He called also on the Ministry to ensure that it awards contracts to people, who have the equipment and the technical know-how to avoid wasting resources on under-performing contractors.
Mr Amoyaw said supervisors of shoddy projects should be punished to serve as deterrent to others.
