22-year-old man jailed for cell phone theft
A circuit court in Techiman, presided by Mr Michael Kudjo Ntumy, has sentenced 22 year-old Kwasi Ayuba, unemployed, to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a mobile phone.
Ayuba pleaded guilty to stealing the phone valued at GH¢ 160 and was convicted on his own plea.
Prosecuting, Detective Sergeant Batholomew Diboro, told the court that at about 1230 hours on July 19 this year, Ayuba visited a drinking bar operated by the complainant to buy some drinks.
As the complainant turned to serve him, Ayuba quickly picked a Sagem Mobile Phone lying on a sewing machine and left without buying the drinks.
Detective Sergeant Diboro said when the complainant realized that the phone was missing she alerted her waiters.
Ayuba was traced to his house where he admitted stealing the phone but that he had given it to a friend who could not be traced.
Giving sentence, Mr Ntumy said the court would not deal leniently with cases of stealing since the snatching of phones and duping of innocent persons had become rampant in Techiman and its environs.
