Farmers advised to control army worms
Mr. Mac Lawrence Ahiadu, Nkoranza South District Director of Agricultural Services, has advised maize farmers in the district to spray their farms with pesticides to control army worm infestation.
Addressing the agricultural sub-committee of the district assembly on how to control the spread of army worms in the area, Mr. Ahiadu said the directorate had ordered for insecticides for the control of the pests this crop season.
For the past three years, army worms have been destroying maize farms during the minor crop season.
Mr. Ahiadu advised maize farmers to pay regular visits to their farms in order to detect the slightest signs of the pest for immediate attention.
He disclosed that about 600 acres of land had been acquired for block maize farming and urged the farmers to take advantage of the government subsidy on fertilizer and access the facility.
Mr. Ahmed Gyabaah, chairman of the committee, called on the assembly members to educate their constituents on how to control the army worm infestation and to adhere to advice by agricultural extension officers to minimize infestation on their farms.
