Police road operations yield GH¢10,600 in court fines
A total of GH¢10,600 have been accrued from court fines imposed on 56 drivers arrested by a joint task force of the Tema Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) and the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA).
Last week, the drivers were arrested on the Tema-Afienya Road and Ashaiman Township for various road traffic and motor offences.
Superintendent Daniel Ansong-Dankyi, Tema Regional MTTU Commander, disclosed this on Friday during another operation at Dawa on the Tema-Aflao Road.
The Dawa operation was led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Augustine Gyening, Tema Regional Police Commander.
Superintendent Ansong-Dankyi said the vehicles which were impounded by the Task Force were released to the drivers after paying the court fines.
ACP Gyening stated that a total of 28 vehicles comprising private and commercial such as tipper and articulated trucks were impounded on the Aflao road.
He indicated that some of the offences included heavy vehicles with “underweight licenses,” over-speeding, expired licenses and absence of fire extinguishers and warning triangles. He reiterated the call on motorists to adhere to road safety practices to reduce the spate of accidents and to save lives.
ACP Gyening also entreated passengers to desist from venting their anger on MTTU personnel when drivers of vehicles they were travelling on were accosted.
He said, instead, they should insist that the drivers did the right thing as such exercises were meant to ensure the safety of all road users.
Mr George Afful, Deputy Tema Regional Licensing Officer, said the Task Force was to verify the genuineness of driving licenses and other driving documents.
He said it was DVLA’s responsibility to check drivers on the roads to ascertain whether they were using the proper documents.
The Task Force arranged for vehicles to convey passengers to their various destinations while the impounded vehicles were kept at the Tsopoli Police Station.
The drivers have been processed for court on Monday, November 8.
