Government commits GH¢32m to subsidise fertiliser for farmers

Kwesi Ahwoi - Agric Minister

Mr Kwesi Ahwoi, Minister of Food and Agriculture said on Thursday that government was subsidising the price of 100,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser at the cost of GH¢ 32 million for the 2010 farming season.

Mr Ahwoi who made this known on the floor of Parliament noted that the current cost was dictated by the fallen world price of the commodity.

He said in 2009, 72,795 metric tonnes of fertilisers costing GH¢ 34.4 million were subsidised to farmers through the coupon system.

Mr Ahwoi said the high administrative cost and the abuse associated with the coupon system compelled government to discontinue the process and replaced it with the waybill-receipt scheme.

The Minister said NPK is selling at GH¢27, SOA, GH¢18 and Urea GH¢25.
