Private Security employees call for Security Regulatory Council

The Union of Private Security Employees, Ghana (UPSEG) on Tuesday called on the government to establish a Private Security Regulatory Council to regulate the activities of the private security sector.

Nana Kofi Adu II, General Secretary of UPSEG, said the Council would, among other things, monitor and regulate the activities of the private security industry in terms of conditions of service, how security personnel were trained, and the type of people who set up these companies.

Nana Adu made the call in Accra at a press conference organised by UPSEG on the challenges confronting private security employees and their Unions in the wake of the oil production in Ghana.

He said the Labour Department was yet to issue the Union with a certificate of registration four years after their application.

Nana Adu said some organisations also failed to settle their bills for services rendered by security companies, thus causing problems for workers in the union.

He said for to ensure that members of the union were paid well, clients of the industry should guarantee that they put in their contractual agreement a clause indicating what percentage of the money should go directly to the guards while making sure that it was within the minimum wage.

Nana Adu II said UPSEG was in collaboration with Trades Union Congress and other labour organisations to register all private security guards and all those interested in the private security job.

“Such people would be given Identity Cards and some education so that when they are employed the Union will follow up to ensure that they are treated as lawful workers in Ghana,” he said.

He said the Factory Inspectorate Law should be reviewed to empower the Factory Inspectorate Division to visit offices to ensure that employers made adequate provision for a satisfactory working environment.

The Union appealed to the Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Roads and Transport to ensure that all commercial vehicles have police emergency numbers boldly written in them for any passenger to call in case of an emergency.
