League leaders Chelsea pips Mighty Jets
Tudu Mighty Jets’ siege in the Premiership was brought to a halt by visiting League leaders, Bechem Chelsea who scored early in their ultimate first round game that ended 1-0 at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra.
Chelsea’s dominance run through the entire game and it was not surprising when Emmanuel Banahene scored in 12 minutes when he finished neatly a squared pass from Bismark Idan to pick all three points and consolidate their hold on the standings.
While the homers lacked shine and the cutting edge each time they approached the final third, Chelsea proved mouthful in all departments of the game and demonstrated why they are growing from strength to strength on the summit.
Two minutes on, Idan could only agonizingly watch his well struck volley from a solo move deflect off the cross bar to safety after he rubbed off a Jets defender of the ball just in front of the penalty box, as he raced deep and fired a hefty one at goal.
The well composed visitors could have increased their goal tally but somehow, Jets remained luckier for the reminder of the half and when they returned from recess, it was obvious Coach Jonas Amissah’s dressing room [pep talk had hit the right nerves.
Jets got better with time and Kofi Owusu was unlucky to have his well curled shot roll off the upright to the relief of the league leaders four minutes into the half.
The homers stepped on the gear from there but without any cutting edge coupled with lousy finishing and when Aaron Amoah’s free-kick went off the post in the half, it was obvious Jets lacked the power to match Chelsea.
Action will suddenly switch and it was Chelsea who became the beneficiary. Idan brought back the tormenting pressure on Jets but it was the homers substitute Osumanu Rahim who would be cursing his stars after he failed woefully to draw parity in the dying minutes.
Rahim was picked out by a fine pass from the middle and with Chelsea’s goalkeeper Maxwell Banahena compromised, the striker with only a yawning net at his mercy, shot surprisingly shot wide and his reaction that saw him collapse unto the turf afterwards summed up his disappointment and that of the supporters and team mates.
