NYEP to establish provident fund
The National Youth Employment Programme is to establish a provident fund for beneficiaries of the scheme to ensure that they are paid regularly at the end of the month.
The National Co-ordinator of the programme, Mr Abuga Pele made this known in Bolgatanga at the weekend, during the passing out of 526 Community Protection Assistants (CPAs).
He said plans were far advanced to introduce the programme beneficiaries to entrepreneurial training to prepare them to establish their own businesses.
Mr Pele said so far the programme had recruited a total number of 4,000 and envisioned that by 2012, it would hit a target of 30,000.
He said out of the target, 10,000 are expected to be recruited into the security services.
Mr Pele said the training received by the CPAs by the Ghana Police Service marked the beginning of an era to facilitate the combat of crime.
He said an exit plan had been put in place by the programme to absorb NYEP beneficiaries into permanent jobs.
The National Co-ordinator admonished the CPA’s to exhibit high level of discipline, which was a cardinal principle to determine their exit process.
The Upper East Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Bright Oduro said the recruits who underwent six weeks training at the Police Training School at Pwalugu distinguished themselves.
He said the extension of the training programme from three weeks to six weeks was designed to expose the recruits to crucial issues such as Community Policing, Powers of Arrest and Human Rights to prepare them adequately for the challenges ahead.
Mr Pele warned the recruits to be mindful that the training they had received did not make them policemen adding: “For those of you who will be posted to the Police, the training gives you the necessary skills to assist… in crowd control, motor traffic and other police duties, which you would be assigned by your supervisors to do.”
He said the Police Administration would not countenance any CPA who would be caught in acts such as extortion, high handedness and inhuman treatment of motorists and passengers.
