National Service Secretariat hands over 4,004 bags of maize to Ghana Education Service

The National Service Secretariat (NSS) has  handed over to the Ghana Education Service (GES) 4,004 bags of maize, harvested  from its farming project at Ejura.

The 95 beneficiary schools would pay reduced prices for the maize  cultivated under the youth in agriculture intervention, for distribution to  public Senior High Schools (SHS) in Ashanti.

Mrs Elizabeth Amoah Tetteh, a Deputy Minister of Education, encouraged second cycle institutions to embark on large-scale agricultural projects not only to expose students to practical farming but to generate income.

This would enable them to complement government’s funding for smooth management of the schools.

Mrs Tetteh lauded the healthy collaboration between the GES and the NSS in the socio-economic development of the country and advised the youth to form agricultural co-operative societies.

Mr Steven Senam Kuagbenu, the Executive Director of the NSS, deplored reported cases of threats and victimization of service personnel by some groups of youth in Tamale and appealed for adequate security protection for them.

“Service personnel are the assets of the state and must therefore be given every necessary support and security, to discharge their national responsibilities in peace”, he added.      More than 5,000 service personnel have been posted to the Northern Region and are engaged in the health and education sectors.
Receiving the maize on behalf of the schools, Mr Anthony Appiah, Ashanti Regional Chairman of Conference of Head of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS),  said they were grateful to the NSS adding that it would provide the schools with  some relief in the feeding of the students.
