Glo reneges on sponsorship agreement

Telecommunications giant, Glo Mobile Ghana has reneged on its sponsorship responsibilities to the Premier League despite enjoying the deserved benefits.

Glo entered into a five-year agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as the headline sponsors for the elite League, at three million US dollars each year, but has failed to fulfill the payment terms for the 2009/2010 and the 2010/2011 seasons.

Welbeck Abra-Appiah, Chairman of the Premier League Board (PLB) told GNA Sports “Glo is yet to fully honour its terms of the sponsorship agreement for 2009/2010, let alone that of 2010/2011.”

The visibly disappointed Chairman said “despite this unfortunate situation, the company enjoyed all the sponsorship benefits it was entitled by the Clubs, the PLB, and GFA”.

The Chairman declined to give details about the exact money in arrears, saying “I wish you hadn’t asked this question.”

Information pieced together by the GNA Sports indicate that the GFA was yet to receive the remaining 1,500,000 dollars of last season’s sponsorship, plus a huge chunk for the 2010/2011 Premiership that ends in May.

Glo also failed to make good their commitment to settle the outstanding bills for the 2009/2010 season in three installments by August 2010.

The package for the 2010/2011 season was expected by December 2010.

Glo, a subsidiary of Globacom International’s contract with the Premier League runs until the end of the 2013/14 football season.
