NALAG congratulates new Assembly Members
The President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, has congratulated assembly members-elect on their victory in the hotly contested elections.
He said at the appropriate time, they would be welcomed to their various Metropolitan, Municipal and district assemblies.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Apam, the NALAG President expressed disappointment about the heavy casualties that befell members of the former assemblies who sought re-election.
He said reports gathered showed that more than 80 per cent of the former assembly members who contested the election lost.
Mr Aidoo-Mensah said the heavy lost indicated that the performance of the previous assemblies did not meet the aspirations of the people, and urged them to turn the tide when the assemblies were inaugurated.
“We expect most of the old members to be returned to the assemblies for their experience to bear on its activities”, he said and added that this was not the case.
Mr Aidoo-Mensah said if this had to continue, it would retard the progress of the assemblies which had to train new members every four years.
The NALAG President appealed to his fellow Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to take note of the problem and to encourage assembly members to relate well with their people.
