Accra Mayor urges prosecutors to be above reproach
Mr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, on Monday urged prosecutors to be above reproach to be able to deal with the wrongs in society.
He stated that the high level of indiscipline in the Accra Metropolis such as hawkers taking over streets and pavements with their wares, houses being built on waterways; animals straying freely in communities among others should be stemmed out, especially as the city had been declared a millennium city.
Mr Vanderpuije was addressing the opening session of a three-day training workshop for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) Sanitation Court Prosecutors in Accra.
The training was to build their capacity and improve on their performance to enable the people to have confidence in them and the courts.
He announced that the AMA would soon establish four new courts in Ablekuma North, Okaikoi South, Okaikoi North and Osu Klottey Sub-Metropolitan Areas to ease congestion in the courts and help handle sanitation and motor offences.
Mr Vanderpuije assured the participants that the assembly was working to address the challenges confronting them and create a good image for a positive reflection on the assembly.
Mr Yaw Twumasi-Ankrah, a Legal Officer at the assembly and Training Coordinator, said although the prosecutors had been prosecuting cases at the sanitation courts, none of them had been formally trained for the job, adding that it was one of the reasons for their frequent loss of cases on technical and legal grounds.
The training, he said, would identify the fundamental problems facing prosecutors and address them in order to ensure they were well equipped to perform their duties.
Mr Twumasi-Ankrah urged the participants to take advantage of the training to enhance their performance.
