Lions beat Hearts in Accra

A well drilled and disciplined Kpando Heart of Lions on Sunday descended on Accra Hearts of Oak and inflicted a well deserved lone goal victory over the home side, in the 18th Week Premier League match at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra.

Hearts started the game on a more purposeful note, stringing their passes together and piled pressure on the visitors but the well composed defence of Lions held their own to prevent any havoc in the initial stages.

Lions gradually warmed themselves into the game and in the 8th minute, Hearts central defender Osei Bonsu made a timely intervention to deny Lions’ Gilbert Fiamenyo from causing any harm, when the burly striker was put through.

Hearts’ Douglas Nkrumah followed up with an opportunistic shot which the Lions keeper, Joseph Addo struggled to prevent the ball from entering his net.

The Phobians continued with their onslaught but when Nkrumah who beat an off-side trap laid a neat cross on the path of Edwin Pele Osei had his pass cleared on the goal line by Lions Kweku Andoh, it became clear that Hearts had to double their effort.

Lions mounted a counter-attack in the 40th minute but Daniel Bonsu in a good position to find the net shot off-target to the dismay of his colleagues just before Hearts’ Mahatma Otoo also missed target narrowly after beating the Lions keeper.

Lions came into the second half a refreshed side and quickly announced their intention when Fiamenyo ruffled the Hearts goalie Tetteh Luggard with a non-drop shot. The determined Lions side continued to probe for the opener and found the net on the 55th minute when Ofosu Amoah beat his marker before laying a pass on the path of Fiamenyo who made no mistake to send home a grounder that beat a sprawling Luggard for the only goal of the match.

After the goal, Lions resorted to neat and composed man-to-man passes as they stringed their passes together to the applause of the fans and seemed content with the lone victory.

However in the 75th minute, Hearts had the opportunity to break even but substitute Wilson Andoh messed up with the opportunity as he casually kicked the ball for a defender to clear from target.

Lions continued with their eye pleasing game and nearly got the second goal but after tearing apart the Hearts defence, Ofosu Amoah’s shot hit a defender and out of play to the relief of the home fans.

Not even the five minutes of added time could salvage Hearts from an imminent defeat.
