Riot at Buduburam, one killed, many injured

A violent clash between factions of the Liberian refugee community at the Buduburam Camp yesterday led to the death of a 25-year-old woman, with many others sustaining various degree of injury.

The refugees attacked the local police station and the clinic at the camp with stones, sticks and other implements and destroyed property as a result.

So far, 20 suspects have been arrested and placed in lawful custody to assist the police in their investigations into the incident.

It took a combined team of policemen from the Rapid Response Unit (RRD), the Armoured Car Squadron and the Police Headquarters to bring the situation under control and prevent further damage to lives and property.

According to the Director of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, the refugees at the camp had a management committee in place which sought their welfare.

He said recently there was an attempt by a faction of the refugees to dissolve the substantive committee and set up an interim one.

He said the United Nations agencies and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) did not recognise the new group and advised members of that faction to use laid down procedures to channel any grievances they had.

Supt Ofori said the advice was ignored and the group decided to inaugurate the new committee yesterday.

He said those refugees who were in favour of the old committee decided to prevent the inauguration of the new one and that sparked off the violence.

He said the police would investigate the incident thoroughly and the perpetrators brought to justice.

The director said in view of the seriousness of the violence, the police resorted to the required force level to subdue it by firing warning shots and tear gas to deter the mob from further violence.

Meanwhile, the Police Administration has reminded all residents of the camp and citizens that they are enjoined to respect the laws of the land.

It described the incident as unfortunate, adding that the aggrieved faction should have resorted to the appropriate or relevant bodies to handle the issue amicably, instead of resorting to violence.

Well, from what I have read on this your site I think, the person who wrote this was given a very wrong story, and if they want to know what actually happen here should kindly come at the camp to find out, as The Police of Ghana just came here to Kill the Innocent people, as WHAT I think these police men that was sent here on Sunday are all new police man who have just graduated and they brought them here to come and practice on we the Liberia because they know nothings will come from out of it. but remember we are all African and we should live as one as there are over million Ghanaian living in Liberia.
