Poor packaging said to cause failure of local producers

Poor packaging has been identified as one of the major reasons for the failure of locally manufactured goods to compete favourably with imported goods.

The Managing Director of Qualiplast Ghana, Mr. Fares Akl, who stated this at the first graduation of the Institute of Packaging in Accra noted that poor packaging was the reason why 80% of consumer goods sold are imported.

He said poor and inadequate packaging also contributes to product damage and post-harvest loss of fresh produce which is estimated at over 25%.

“The commencement of a professional training in Ghana is therefore, a laudable idea because it will provide the students with the relevant expertise in packaging and create profit for institutions,” he said.

Mr. Akl said the packaging industry was therefore of strategic importance in influencing the development of African economies because it played a unique role in adding value to the manufacturing and export sectors.

He added that packaging had become a means of competition in today’s world, because of increasing standards of living.

The comments by the manager is in the right direction but we should not forget the fact that packaging adds a lot to the marginal cost. Ghanaian companies should improve over the existing onee. If care is not taking the final price of the product will become expensive and may not compete well in terms of price. Thanks
