Arabic should be made examinable subject – Council
The National Islamic Education Unit Council has reiterated the demand that Arabic be made an examinable subject at the Basic Education Certificate Examination.
This the council said was necessary to open up more educational opportunities for Muslim students, particularly in Arabic-speaking countries.
Sheikh Dr Ismael Saeed Adam, an Executive Member, made the call at the first ever national stakeholders’ meeting of the Council in Kumasi.
It was meant to create a platform to interact with Regional Managers of Islamic schools and other stakeholders to adopt effective measures to promote secular education among the Muslim youth.
He appealed to non-governmental organisations and the well -to- do Muslims to support the Council to run in-service training for Arabic teachers to build their capacity for optimal performance.
Sheikh Dr Saeed also spoke of the need for government to help resource the Mission education units to play their supervisory role.
He encouraged Muslim parents to make sure that they give their children secular education to facilitate their progress.
Mr Abubakar Baba, General Manager of the Council, asked teachers to be committed to their job.
