Farmer remanded for causing damage

Yohannes Kwasi, a 26-year-old farmer, was on Friday remanded into police custody by a Koforidua Circuit Court for causing unlawful damage and harm.

Yohannes pleaded not guilty and will reappear on April 20.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Eric Twum-Frimpong told the court that the complainant, Rebecca Tetteh, a farmer, resides with her three children at Krobo-Mayewa near Begoro whiles the accused lives at Asuyiri junction also near Begoro.

He said about six months ago, Kwasi proposed love to the complainant who accepted.

The prosecutor said whiles in the relationship, the complainant who did not like how Kwasi was behaving decided to end the relationship to avoid problems.

He said Kwasi was reported to have warned the complainant that she was not going to find life easy if she should end the relationship.

Inspector Twum-Frimpong said Kwasi wrote a threatening letter to the complainant and requested her to pay back all monies he spent on her during their relationship.

He said the complainant did not take the threats in the letter seriously and thought nothing was going to happen.

However on March 17 at about 0100 hours, whiles the complainant and her children were asleep, Kwasi sneaked himself to the complainant’s house and set the room ablaze destroying personal belongings including GH¢500.00.

One of the complainant’s children aged 11 sustained injuries during the disturbances.

The prosecutor said the victim was rushed to the Begoro District hospital and was admitted for three days.

Inspector Twum-Frimpong said Kwasi was later arrested and in his caution statement to the police, denied knowing anything about the offence.

He said a witness in the case who happened to be the complainant’s father saw the accused running out of the house after setting it on fire.

The prosecutor said investigations conducted later proved that the accused committed the offence.
