GNAT leadership ready to meet Concerned Teachers
The Ashanti Regional Council of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has expressed its readiness to meet with the leadership of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) to address their complaints and restore calm.
The original teachers’ union said the concerns raised by the aggrieved group was welcome in good faith and that they had accepted to step up the education of their members on all issues relating to their welfare.
Mr Anthony William Nantwi, the Regional Chairman, said this in a statement read at a press conference held at the Teachers’ Hall in Kumasi on Friday.
It was meant to respond to the accusations of incompetence and insensitivity made against the leadership of the teachers’ association in the heat of widespread anger over anomalies in their salaries, following their migration unto the single spine salary structure (SSSS) in February.
The GNAT leadership was also slammed for non-transparency, lack of accountability and ineffective communication.
Mr Nantwi acknowledged that the spontaneous street demonstration by the teachers for unfair treatment under the SSSS was a wake up call to the leadership of the association.
This had also strengthened the resolve of the joint GNAT and National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) negotiating team to work even harder for a just and better deal for teachers.
They said the leadership should not be blamed for the quantum of salary increase paid to teachers because they had been doing everything to champion the cause of their members.
The Council urged the coalition to make sure that their grievances were addressed through the constitutional process of the GNAT.
