Traditional rulers urged to partner district assemblies for revenue mobilisation
Traditional rulers in the Upper West Region have been called upon to partner with the district assemblies to mobilise enough revenue to develop their districts.
Mr Cezar Kale, Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, made the call at a ceremony to outdoor Naa Dr Ernest Sangsor-Tulong I, as the Chief of Gengekpe Community in the Nandom Traditional Area of the Lawra District.
Mr Kale said it was because of the rich experience that traditional rulers had in matters relating to governance and development that some of them had been appointed to the municipal and district assemblies.
He urged the district assemblies to establish effective communication linkages with the traditional councils to enable the traditional rulers to make relevant inputs into the policies and programmes of the assemblies.
Mr Kale said government attached great importance to education and would therefore provide the needed basic infrastructure and also motivate teachers to give off their best.
The Deputy Regional Minister described the outdooring of Naa Dr Sangsor-Tulong as welcome news considering his level of experience in issues of development.
He reminded the chief that his people would expect nothing short of a selfless leader who would serve them with zeal and commitment and manage the affairs of the area with absolute credibility to bring about development.
He assured the new chief of government’s support and urged him to use his skin to foster peace and unity among his people, saying it was only when there was peace that development could thrive.
Dr Benjamin Kumbuor, Minister of the Interior, described Naa Dr Sangsor-Tulong as an intellectual who served mother Ghana in various capacities adding that he had no doubt that with his rich experience and wide contacts he would bring development to his people.
Dr Kumbuor, who is also a son of the area, acknowledged the role of Naa Dr Sangsor-Tulong in the establishment of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA).
Mr Sampson Abu, Lawra District Chief Executive (DCE), encouraged the chief to serve his people with love, respect and humility and help foster peace, harmony and development in the district.
He urged the people of Gengekpe to give their chief the needed support and co-operation in order to make his reign a remarkable one.
Naa Dr Puoure Puobe Chiir VII, Paramount Chief of the Nandom Traditional Area and President of the Nandom Traditional Council, assured the new chief of the Council’s support to promote peace, unity and development.
Naa Dr Sangsor-Tulong pledged to lead his people in peace and unity devoid of discrimination and encourage them to take self help development projects.
Known in private life as Dr Ernest Kunfaa, the chief until his enskinment was a Lecturer at the Wa Campus of the University for Development Studies and a former Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
