Chief wants military, police action on wee smokers
Nana Owusu Akyeaw Brempong, Chief of Donkro-Nkwanta, a farming community in Nkoranza District on Monday appealed to the Brong-Ahafo Regional Security Council to deploy a joint military and police patrol team to clamp down on the activities of Indian hemp smokers and peddlers in the area.
He said even though there was a police post in the town, the nefarious activities of some of the youth had got out of hand and needed to be brought under control.
The Chief made the appeal when he addressed more than 300 youth at a seminar at Donkro-Nkwanta, which was on the theme, “youth’s decisions: making or marring your life”. It was organised by Deeper Life Bible Church.
Nana Brempong said most of the youth indulged in wee smoking and peddling and as a result the area continued to record increasing cases of pilfering, armed robbery and violent acts.
He said for fear of their lives police personnel in the area “sometimes looked on unconcerned” whilst the wee pundits smoked openly at funeral grounds in the full glare of their parents.
Nana Brempong said the uncouth behaviour of the youth had gradually become a norm and had increased the number of school dropouts and teenage pregnancy cases.
“It is very difficult to get a virgin among school-going girls in the area”, the traditional ruler said, adding that for some years now the area could not even boast of a citizen in government “because the youth prefer wee smoking and peddling to education.”
He commended the church and advised that such seminars should be organised periodically to help mould the children for their future well-being.
Pastor Paul Adu-Agyei, Abesim District Pastor of the Church, said aside of spiritual development, Deeper Life was also poised to ensure that the youth were trained properly to become responsible adults.
Pastor Adu-Agyei appealed to the youth to channel their exuberance into productive ventures.
