Nurse calls for enforcement of Minimum Marital Age Law
A senior nurse at the Koforidua Central Hospital, Ms Doris Bonsu, has called for the enforcement of the Minimum Marital Age Law to deter the youth from pre-mature sex and marriages.
She made the call at a farewell party for graduates of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA), Junior High School at Tinkong, on Tuesday.
Ms Bonsu noted with concern that most youth, especially teenagers, engaged in pre-marital sex through ignorance and peer pressure, saying statistics showed that 38 per cent of adolescent girls were sexually active as against 19 per cent of boys.
She, therefore, cautioned teenage girls to desist from pre-mature marriages after completion of basic education but forge ahead for higher laurels.
She also urged parents and traditional authorities to devise educative platforms for the youth regularly to control their marital desires.
An opinion leader at Tinkong, Mr Thomas Sefa, advised parents not to be content with the basic education of their children but strive to send them to higher institutions of learning and vocational centres to acquire skills worth living with.
The headmaster of the school, Mr Sakyiama Boateng, advised the outgoing students to be of good behaviour wherever they found themselves.
