Ghanaian youth urged to transform country’s economy
Dr Fritz Augustine Gockel, a Senior Lecturer, University of Ghana on Saturday urged the youth to work towards the transformation of the country’s economy from manual to a knowledge based one.
He said the youth should not only develop interest in Information Communication and Technology (ICT) but must exploit its advantages to help turn the economy around.
Dr Gockel gave the advice when he launched the Golden Jubilee Celebration of St Mary’s Seminary Senior High School (SMASCO), in Ho.
SMASCO is based at Lolobi, in the Hohoe Municipality.
The Anniversary scheduled for October this year is on the theme: “50 years of Catholic Education and Discipline: Implication for National Development.”
Dr Gockel observed that the service sector of the Ghana’s economy was out-growing the agricultural and industrial sectors, saying it was time for the youth to use ICT to respond to the challenges.
He said the world has become a global village, shrunk by time and space where the youth could no longer afford to remain in “voluntary slavery”.
Dr Gockel asked the youth to use ICT to expand the economy and create jobs.
Colonel Cyril Necku (Rtd), Deputy Volta Regional Minister commended the Catholic Church for its contribution to the education sector and re-emphasised government’s commitment to promote education.
He called on the Old Boys of the School to appreciate the valuable impact SMASCO had made in their lives and reciprocate that good gesture for the benefit of the society.
Most Reverend Francis Kofi Anani Lodonu, Catholic Bishop of Ho commended SMASCO for doing well in the past 50 years.
He stressed the need for the society to place emphasis on religious and intellectual excellence.
Mr Patrick Adomprey, Chairman of the School’s Board of Governors said SMASCO had produced priests and many intellectuals who were rendering services in many parts of the world.
An appeal for fund was launched in aid of an ICT centre and an ultra modern library for the school.
