Volta region anxious to see work on Public University take shape

The people of the Volta Region are anxious to see government’s commitment to a public university in the region translated into actual work on the ground.

This expectation was one of the major issues discussed at a meeting between a delegation of Chiefs from the region and President John Atta Mills in Accra in April.

Togbe Afede XIV, President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, said this when he briefed a general meeting of the House on the meeting with the President.

Early this year, President Mills performed a ground breaking ceremony for the proposed University of Health and Allied Sciences at Sokode near Ho.

At that ceremony and at subsequent forums, the Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Amenowode, said a number of related institutions and facilities in and around Ho would be put in shape to admit the first batch of students into the University in September this year.

Experts however said the proposed University would require legislation to take off.

Other projects the people of the region were anxiously waiting to see actualized include the Eastern Corridor road linking the South of the country to the North through the Volta Region, Togbe Afede said.

He said the delegation also appealed to President Mills for a gas delivery terminal in the South of the region to connect the West Africa Gas Project (WAGP) to facilitate the establishment of gas related plants in the region.
