Chief Nursing Officer calls for training of more male nurses
Mr Kumi Kyeremeh, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at the Ministry of Health, has called for the training of more male nurses for the rural areas.
He said if more males are trained as Community Health Nurses and sent to rural areas, it would help address some of the challenges faced by young female staff who might have genuine concerns and reject the posting to the rural areas.
The Chief Nursing Officer said this at a durbar to mark the end of the celebration of the Students Representative Council and Alumini week of the Winneba Community Health Nurses Training School.
It was under the theme: “Quality pre-service education, the need for adequate infrastructure in the contemporary health system”.
He said the quality of pre-service is presently affected by many factors including the right selection of candidates who are really interested in the profession and inadequate infrastructure in terms of classroom and hostels for candidates.
Mr Kyeremeh said such a situation presents a challenge in effort to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) among the training of more males nurses and midwives.
He said two countries, Gambia and Zambia train males as midwives for the rural areas to help meet their MDG.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Mike Hammah, urged parents to place the education of their children above the acquisition of personal wealth.
