Eastern Regional Police arrest 25 for traffic offence
The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested 25 drivers in the New Juaben Municipality for committing motor traffic offences.
Speaking to the media in Koforidua on Monday, the Eastern Regional Commanding Officer of the Motor Traffic Transport Unit (MTTU), Superintendent of Police James Sarfo-Peprah, said the drivers were arrested for jumping red lights, stopping, picking of passengers and parking at unauthorized places and obstruction of traffic.
He said about six months ago, his outfit undertook an operation to decongest the Koforidua central business area.
Mr Sarfo-Peprah said the exercise was successful but drivers had come back to the places they were asked not to park and pick passengers creating unnecessary and unbearable traffic for other road users.
He said it was against that backdrop that they decided to carry another exercise and that those arrested were warned and set free but those who would break the rules again would be prosecuted.
Mr Sarfo-Peprah said the police would continue to carry out periodic operations in the municipality to ensure that the whole central business area was decongested for free flow of traffic.
He appealed to the New Juaben Municipal Assembly to provide lights at the lorry stations so that the drivers could do business at night and stop coming to the road side.
