Educationist calls for more support for women
Ms Gladys Amaning, Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Education, has called for the creation of more favourable conditions for the retention of girls in schools.
He said: “Our development and advancement as a nation should be tied to a conscious and systematic promotion of education and skills training amongst our women folk”.
Ms Amaning was speaking at the maiden graduation ceremony of the Presbyterian Girls Senior High School in Kumasi.
She said in communities where cultural and socio-economic practices tended to be unfair to women, education remained the only option for through which they could realize their potentials to enable them to effectively contribute to national development.
Ms Amaning said high level literacy among women would help them to become assertive and protect their rights and freedoms.
She advised students to take the study of Information, Communications and Technology courses seriously to help them upgrade their knowledge.
Reverend Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, Asante Presbytery Chairperson of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, called on government to give religious bodies more autonomy in the management of mission schools.
This would encourage them invest more resources for effective running of the schools.
Ms Theresah Akua Baah, Headmistress, advised students to be God-fearing and disciplined.
A total of 165 students graduated and were presented with certificates of honour.
