Wildlife closed season begins on August 1

The annual wildlife closed season, which is the period when wildlife is protected from hunting and capturing, spans from August 1st to December 1st.

It is therefore illegal for anybody to hunt, capture or destroy any wild animal anywhere in the country during the season.

Mrs Exorm Ametordo Erskine, an official at the Western and Central Regional office of the Wildlife Division told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Takoradi in an interview on Thursday.

She said the season enforced by law, forms part of the Wildlife Conservation Regulation.

Mrs Erskine said grasscutter could, however, be hunted during the season with a license from the Wildlife Division.

She said the breeding season of most wild animals that formed the bulk of protein supply to the rural areas fall within this period and killing them at this time would pose great danger to their continued existence.

Mrs Erskine called on the Police, district assemblies, traditional authorities, unit committees and well meaning Ghanaians to help to enforce the law on closed season.
