Mfantseman Fire Station receives new tender
The government has provided the Mankessim Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) a new fire tender in fulfillment of its promise to resource fire stations to perform effectively.
Handing over the tender to the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Henry Kweku Hayfron at Mankessim, the Central Regional Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Kwesi Ankonam Quayson, appealed to the people of the region to practice fire safety in their homes and workplaces.
He said the region experienced 176 fire outbreaks from January to May 2011 as against 197 within the same period in 2010.
Mr Quayson appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to decongest markets and cautioned market women and traders to desist from displaying their wares on the access roads to the markets.
He said the GNFS would soon start prosecuting businessmen and women who did not insure their businesses.
The Municipal Fire Officer, Division Officer Grade (DO1) Samuel Oliver Adabo, said fire prevention was a shared responsibility and called for support for GNFS in the municipality to undertake programmes aimed at preventing fire.
He said the municipality was without a fire tender since the one at the station had an accident a year ago and commended the government for providing them with a new one.
Mr Hayfron said the assembly would do its best to maintain the tender.
Nana Kwesi Brebo III, Chief of Kuntu and Acting President of Nkusukum Traditional Area, appealed to the Ghana Water Company to repair water hydrants and also to construct additional ones.
He appealed to the GNFS to institute Fire Prevention Week to sensitise people on fire prevention.
