Three porters, a taxi driver charged before court
Four persons found to be in possession of a locally made pistol without authority were on Tuesday arraigned at an Accra Circuit Court.
Three of the accused persons, all porters, are Akologo Apeime, Samuel Abane and Papa Atia. The fourth accused, Anafo Abi, is a taxi driver.
The three porters were charged for possessing firearms without lawful authority, attempting to commit crime, possessing instrument intended for unlawful entry. Abi the taxi was charged for aiding the crime.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded into prison custody to re-appear on August 25, 2011.
The Prosecutor, Chief Inspector J.K Anim said on July 6, 2011, the accused persons planned and agreed to come to Accra to rob a white man who resides at Madina, a suburb of Accra.
He said the Madina Police had a wind of the accused intention and therefore laid ambush at the Achimota Lorry Park.
Chief Inspector Anim said the accused boarded a taxi and headed towards Madina, but the Police quickly intercepted and arrested the taxi.
He said when the Police searched into the taxi, a locally made pistol and two knives where found concealed in a bag they were carrying.
He said during interrogation, Apeime, Abane and Atia admitted the offence and mentioned Abi as the brain behind the robbery and also the supplier of the pistol.
He said on July 20, 2011, Abi was also arrested and after investigation charged with the offence.
