Government commended for initiating SIM card registration

The Ghana Media Advocacy Programme (G-MAP), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), seeking the welfare of children, has commended government for initiating the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Card registration exercise since it can help prevent crime through mobile phone.

The NGO appealed to the security agencies to intensify efforts in the fight against cyber crime to woo investors into the country.

These were contained in a statement signed by the Executive Director of the G-MAP, Mr Abdul Malik Jeleel, copied to GNA on Wednesday.

It said “even though the security agencies have taken decisive steps to prevent all forms of crime, there is the need for them to intensify efforts to protect the people, particularly women and children against domestic violence, defilement, rape, armed robbery, fraud and theft.”

The statement noted that violence and crime affected socio-economic development, and called on individuals to volunteer information to the police to facilitate their work.

It appealed to individuals and organisations to support the security agencies to improve on night patrols to enable them to fight armed robbery.

The statement cited Tema, Spintex road, Dansoman, Madina and Adenta as high prone crime areas in the Greater Accra Region.

It noted that the police play a key role in national development, and called on them to discharge their duties professionally to improve the country’s criminal justice system.

The statement tasked the Media “to support the security agencies and other affiliate bodies such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice and the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders in the discharge of their duties.”
