Local Govt. Minister inspect roads to landfill site
Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, has said it was important for all to attach importance to sanitation to ensure a healthy environment.
He said it was about time people adopted proper waste management systems to reduce the level of waste being created across the country.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said this when he inspected work on a temporary road network for the Saba landfill site and Abokobi landfill site in Accra.
He said the construction of the road was in response to a threat by the chiefs and people of Weija to stop trucks from transporting refuse to the site since the road network leading to the site and other surrounding areas was bad.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the government would continue to work hard in order to address the concerns of the people.
He urged the contractors to be very particular about the drainage system and continue to ensure that the project did not exceed the expected date of completion.
He said work on the road network to the Abokobi landfill site would start in a week’s time.
Nii Armah Ashietey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, said indiscipline had become the order of the day and education was needed for all to be aware of the immediate effects of poor sanitation.
He said the decommissioning of the Oblogo and Malam site was being undertaken and efforts would be made to ensure the site is cleared as soon as possible for residents to live comfortably.
Mr Edward Efo Kwame, Project Supervisor, Ghana Highway Authority, said the major challenge of the construction was the availability and access to gravel for the basement and materials for the construction.
He said 80 percent of the base work and 40 percent of tarring had been completed and if materials were provided as soon as possible the final base work would be completed in a week, and also assured that the project would meet the expected deadline.
Mr Sherif Nii Oto Dodoo, Municipal Chief Executive of Ga South, expressed appreciation to the government for its response to the plight of the people.
Mr Derick Tata-Anku, Head of Waste Management Ga East Municipal Assembly, said the major challenge of the site was encroachment and accessibility to it and thanked the minister for his intervention.
