Trend of journalism scaring public officers – Regional Minister
Dr Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi, the Eastern Regional Minister, has noted that the trend of journalism in Ghana presently was putting so much fear in public officers as well as politicians.
Dr Apea-Kubi said it appeared that the role of the journalist in the socio-economic development of the country was degenerating into a situation where a platform had been offered for the lambasting of public officers and politicians.
He observed that journalists had taken politicians hostage by criticizing every move they took in their bid to open a new frontier for national development, adding that, the trend was a disservice to the country.
The Regional Minister made the comment when some members of the Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) called on him in
Koforidua.
He indicated that there were so many developments that the politician fear to embark upon because of “media terrorism”.
According to the Regional Minister, the journalist of today thinks that everything that the politician does must bear direct and immediate results, saying that, “that kind of thinking is hampering a lot of development programmes because if it fails the politician is dead”.
He gave an instance where someone told him that “if journalist saw the cost involved in renovating the residency, his name would be dragged into mud” and wondered why that should be a norm.
Dr Apea-Kubi said “as a nation, we must give room to new things in our quest to improve the lot of Ghanaians”.
