Government commended for re-introducing vacation camps for youths
The Mfantseman Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Henry Kweku Hayfron has commended the government for re-introducing vacation camps for the youth, as an effort to rekindle communal spirit in the country.
Mr Hayfron, who opened a vacation camp for the youth of Mfantseman Municipality at Yamoransa, near Cape Coast, recounted the immense benefits the nation derived from such camps in the 1970s through to the 1980s.
He pointed out that Mankessim Senior High School was constructed through the efforts of the youth at a vacation camp.
Mr Hayfron noted that voluntary communal service and patriotism had waned considerably among the youth and expressed joy with government’s attempt to revive it.
He said reviving the youth work camp was also to promote the participation of the youth in community development activities so as to enhance cultural integration and the patriotism needed to build a better Ghana for the present and next generations.
The MCE said currently 30 youth camps were being organised nationwide, with three in each region and said Mfantseman Municipality, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Municipality and Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District were the beneficiaries of the camp in the Central Region.
He appealed to the people of Yamoransa to support the camp with food items and cash to make their two-week stay a memorable one.
Mr Anthony Arthur, Municipal Youth Coordinator pointed out that much of the indiscipline in the country could be attributed to the neglect of the youth in national programmes and described the re-introduction of the camp as a step towards bringing out the capabilities of the youth.
He said it would go a long way in reducing indiscipline, adding that, most of the youth had turned politicians, hopping from radio station to radio station to insult their opponents because they had nothing to occupy them.
Mr Arthur said though 70 people were expected at the camp only 40 had reported so far.
Nana Egyir Komfo VI, Mankrado of Yamoransa and GyanTuahen of the Nkusukum Traditional Area commended the MCE for bringing the camp to their town.
The camp would desilt choked drains and clean the abandoned market to make it habitable.
