Ghana Evangelical Society celebrates homecoming

Rev. Immanuel Enoch Agbozo

The Ghana Evangelical Society (GES) has held a thanksgiving service to celebrate the homecoming of its members who broke away from the church 20 years ago.

The occasion was to celebrate the Church’s Mission and faithfulness as well as the goodness of God over the years.

The breakaway, which resulted from a misunderstanding between the then “Concerned Ministers and Group Leaders” and the founder of the Society Reverend Enoch Immanuel Agbozo, led to a revolt which rocked the Society’s mission activities, scattered members and subsequently led to a number of splinter para-church groups and churches.

Apart from its impact on the church body the revolt also affected the Church’s support to the nation’s move towards peace, progress and God’s kingdom in the land.

The leading members of the revolt and splinter groups involve recently united and together approached, sought for and obtained forgiveness, reconciliation, peace and restoration of fellowship with the leadership, ministerial fraternity and entire membership of the Society.

In his sermon, the Right Reverend Ebenezer Henry Brew Riverson, a Retired Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, emphasized the importance of unity among Christians and societies in order to earn God’s forgiveness.

He said God was always ready to forgive those, who genuinely confess their sins, repent from their waywardness and ask for forgiveness, adding “the breakaway, the eventual repentance and forgiveness is very symbolic of pilgrimage of the Christian believer,” and one’s ability to overcome temptations and challenges was critical to ensure total victory over Satan.

The Rt. Rev. Brew Riverson narrated the story of the Prodigal son in the Bible, who after mismanaging his inheritance repented and went back home to his father for forgiveness, adding “ the world need to go through such experiences in order for humanity to return to God.”

He thanked the founder, the elders and entire membership of the church for their faithfulness during the challenging times and the period of reconciliation, adding that it was now upon the reconciled members to be firmly united with the others, to cause a revival in the church and also be ambassadors and change for the new harvest for the Kingdom of God.

He urged both Christians and politicians to be mindful about what really constituted freedom and cautioned them against the desire and anxiety to hold onto power, as this could lead to rebellion of people.

He called for unity among all Ghanaians irrespective of their socio-cultural, ethnic, religious, educational or political backgrounds, saying “we need to be serious as a nation and bold in our development agenda in order to stand out and be counted among other nations in the world.

Rev Agbozo admonished Christians to strengthen their connectivity with God through Jesus Christ, in order to reflect God’s true image and character, adding “that connectivity must be a reality so that He will live in us”.

He expressed joy about the fact that God had allowed him to witness the occasion and welcomed the brethren back into the society and urged them to be prayerful and always wait upon the Lord for direction.
