Biometric registration begins by end of the year

Biometric registration of voters is expected to begin by the end of the year, Mr David Oppong Kyekyeiku, District Electoral Officer for the Essikadu-Ketan Sub-Metropolitan Area, said on Tuesday.

Mr Oppong Kyekyeku said this during the election of Chairmen for the Essikado-Ketan and Sekondi Sub-Metropolitan District Councils at Sekondi.

He said biometric registration would prevent multiple registrations and that the problem of minors registering would have to be checked at the registration centres.

He said the biometric registration exercise would begin in the Western Region followed by Central Region and the Greater Accra Region.

Mr Kyekyeiku said the Electoral Commission (EC) is going to create new polling stations in electoral areas that have a population of more than 1,500 people, and that the law requires new polling stations to be created every 10 years or after a census.

The District Electoral Officer said the rationale for this is to ensure that people do not walk long distances or join long queues to vote.

Mr Ebenezer Kwaitoo, Solicitor of STMA, said the assembly would soon review its byelaws and urged assembly members to make inputs to the general assembly.

Mr Harito Bruce and Mr Jim Armoo were elected as Chairmen of the Essikado Ketan and Sekondi Sub-Metropolitan Councils respectively.
