Assemblies urged to institute scholarship schemes
Mr. Cezar Kale, the Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, has appealed to District Assemblies to institute annual District Science Scholarship Schemes to cater for at least three science students who have excelled in science in their districts.
He said this during the Regional Science, Technology, and Mathematics Innovation Education (STMIE) camp held at the Wa Senior High School on Wednesday.
Mr Dery said such scholarship schemes would not only create competition and promote the study of science among both boys and girls but would also help such brilliant students to study science to the highest level.
In addition they would complement the national Mathematics, Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme (MASTESS) instituted by the government for second cycle and tertiary institutions.
Mr. Kale commended the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) for instituting the STMIE and called on teachers to integrate the teaching of science with ICT in order to enrich the content.
He said the government had given approval for the rehabilitation of science laboratories at Wa, Lawra, Nandom, Lassia-Tuolu and Kanton Senior High Schools.
He said 38 schools from the region would benefit from the recent 1,500 laptops donated by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) to the Ministry of Education.
Mr. Iddrisu Mahama, the Regional Director of Education, said the programme was initially organised for only girls in order to bridge the gap between boys and girls in the study of science.
Mr. Ismail Madah, the Regional Science Coordinator said 171 students were participating in this year’s programme.
