Companies urged to regularize their EPA permits or face closure

The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has given owners of businesses in the area 60 days starting from June 29 to August 29 this year to comply with the environmental regulations of the country.

Companies are required to regularize their environmental regulation permits to avoid the closure of their facilities, Mr Felix Addo-Kyere, the Eastern Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), told the GNA in an interview on Thursday.

He said early this year 250 agro-chemical shops and 30 fuel service stations in the region were temporary closed down for non-compliance with environmental protection regulations.

The facilities had either no permits or their permits had expired while others were not complying with the permit conditions.

Mr Addo-Kyere said the greatest challenge to his office was the refusal of some business people in the region to comply with the permit regulations of their facilities.

He said his office was collaborating with the District Assemblies in the region to factor environmental concerns in the development of settlements.
