Drivers suggest subsidy on LPG should be removed

Some private and commercial drivers in Sunyani Municipality have appealed to the government to remove the subsidy on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

The drivers said they preferred buying the gas at the market price rather than the government banning them from using it.

They said this when the Ghana News Agency conducted interviews in Sunyani.

The drivers, especially the commercial ones, said the system “is very bad” and that their usage of gas had made it possible for them to cater for their families.

Mumuni Fusani, a taxi driver, said the gas cheaper as compared with petrol adding, “we are willing to pay for the market price only if we are allowed to use the gas and there is abundant supply.”

Mr. Samuel Gyebiri, a private car owner, said the use of gas had made it possible for him to drive his car for a long period without re-fueling.

“It will be sad news for drivers if the government directs us to stop using gas that does not produce much smoke when vehicles become old as compared to petrol or diesel ones”, he said.

Some residents appealed to the government to consider removing subsidy on LPG for commercial drivers to ensure the product would be available in abundance for domestic use.

The resident, who pleaded anonymity, said the gas shortage could be attributed to its use by commercial drivers, making it difficult for people to obtain it for domestic use.

Mrs. Lydia Anokye, another resident, said her home had been without gas for almost a month and this had compelled her to use charcoal.
