Winneba Hospital introduces new measures to reduce maternal mortality by 15%

The authorities of the Winneba Government Hospital have put in place some measures to help reduce maternal mortality by fifty percent by 2014.

The measures include, strengthening the referral system, making blood available and the continuous education of midwives.

The Administrator of the Hospital, Mr Frempong Hayford said this at a mid-year performance review meeting at Winneba.

The meeting was under the theme ‘Self Discipline in quality health delivery: A tool for achieving millennium development goals 4 and 5”.

Mr Hayford said between January and July this year, the hospital recorded only 2 maternal deaths as against 6 in the same period in 2010.

He said efforts are being made to record zero percent in the coming years and attributed the deaths to low and high blood pressure and the late arrival at the hospital by expectant women.

He advised pregnant women to regularly visit the hospital and also seek early medical attention when they due to deliver.

He said the facility was also aiming at reducing infant mortality and still births, by ensuring quality care and the continuous training of staff on good customer care.

Mr Hayford said malaria continued to top cases brought to the hospital, adding that 6,796 out of 31,258 people who visited the Hospital were diagnosed with the disease.

He appealed to the general public to avoid dumping of refuse indiscriminately, clear their surroundings and help destroy the mosquito breeding areas.
